“You can’t make someone want an education.”
– Imelda Staunton as Margaret Campbell, ‘Freedom Writers’

I didn’t want an education. I wanted nothing to do with learning or school or the people inside them. I never wanted to read or to write or to even listen. School seemed to be a waste of time for someone who couldn’t or wouldn’t understand and just wanted to curl up into a ball and rot.
Then it all changed.
There was something I want to read, something that caught my eye and made me want to understand. Now, suddenly, I can’t stop reading and writing and listening. Now I want to learn, to be in school. I want an education!
It all started with a book. A book called Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick. A sixth grade reading assignment, something that usually was never read but skimmed for answers to the questions in a study packet, but this time I was intrigued. There was something about the book that just made me squeal with glee. The classic tale of making the most unusual friends that make the best come out of you and makes you live life to the fullest, like each day was your last.
Then there was The Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson; another sixth grade reading assignment. But it was more than an assignment – it was my bridge to a world that I had never experienced before, a world of fantasy and science fiction. It opened my eyes to see the world as more than just it was and put my imagination into overdrive.
I reinvented myself; reading nonstop, so much so that I learned how to read and walk simultaneously and never bump into things. I went from reading at a kindergarten level with a book that held only ten pages and had words that rhymed with the most obscene things to reading books without pictures and were hundreds of pages long! I loved to read so much that at the beginning of tenth grade I read the entire Harry Potter series by J.K Rowling in two months – that’s nearly one book in one week.
I want to learn how to write a novel that will inspire others like how Freak the Mighty, The Bridge to Terabithia, and Harry Potter inspired me. I want to ensnare the senses and unlock what everyone has once forgotten; bring to the world a new marvel that captures the heart and soul like it were reality.
Maybe someday I can do all that and be one of the greats. But for now….
I want an education.
